What is wrong with the statement: “Mitosis is when chromosome replication takes place?” What would be a more accurate statement of what takes place during mitosis?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Chromosome replication takes place in both mitosis and meiosis. But in mitosis the chromosomes are replicated and divided into two daughter cells so equal no. of chromosomes will be present in both of them, whereas in mieosis half the no. of chromosomes are received by daughter cells. That's why mitosis is called equational divison and meiosis is called reductional division.

Correct statement would be ' Mitosis is when chromosomes are replicated and distributed equally among two daughter cells.'
