Mostly similar symptoms are caused by both virus and bacteria. Also the spreading occurs in similar way. But there are differences. Bacteria can survive on their own, virus requires a host to multiply. When the symptoms are similar, culture test should be done from blood, urine or stool sample to identify whether the infection is caused by virus or bacteria. After the diagnosis, treatment is different for viral and bacterial infection. In case of viral infection, treatment includes managing symptoms, paracetamol for fever, antiviral medicines to prevent viral reproduction, vaccines. In case of bacterial infection, treatment includes use of antibiotics which cannot treat viral infections.
