In an experiment conducted to determine the driver of plant growth, it was found that in outer space (devoid of gravity), the orientation in plants is guided by light sources instead of gravitational forces. However, the waving pattern differs in outer space as the roots grow in a subtler pattern than their growth pattern on Earth

However, on earth plants use gravity to determine the direction of growth.

Hence, it can be said that gravity is not essential for the root orientation or directional skewing of roots
