A cell fails to repair DNA damage after synthesis. Will the G2/M cyclin be synthesized? Explain your reasoning.
The Cyclin- cdk complex that is needed for entry into M phase is cyclin B- cdk1 complex. This complex is also called maturation promoting factor or MPF. When the sensor proteins in the cell detect a DNA damage they will activate p53 signaling which will have two different end result depending on the repair situation. The p53 tumor supressor will signal for cell cycle arrest and DNA repair if the repair of the damaged DNA is feasible and the cell cycle will continue once the damage is repaired. But when a cell fails to repair DNA p53 will signal for cellular apoptosis so that damaged DNA from this particular cell is not passed on to its subsequent generations. Thus if a cell fails to repair DNA damage after synthesis, the G2/M cyclin will not be synthesized and the cell will undergo apoptosis.
