The restriction endonuclease Not I cuts DNA at the recognition sequence GCGGCCGC. At what frequency do you expect this sequence to be found in a random sample of long DNA? Choose the best answer.

Select one:

once in 6 bases

once in 256 bases

once in 1024 bases

once in 4096 bases

once in 65,536 bases

Answer #1

Once in 65536

We consider only one strand of DNA because the same sequence will be present on opposite strand at same site due to symmetry of sequences. The enzyme cuts 8 base long sequence, and there are 4 bases(A,T,G,C) in DNA.so that 8 positions can be occupied by 4 different bases, the possibility to get the sequence cut by the enzyme is (1/4)8.this possibility is the frequency of cutting by enzyme 1 in 48 sequence can be GCGGCCGC.so frequency =(1/4)8 =1 in 65536.

Genetic/Biology question- Restriction Mapping and Creating and Designing Recombinant DNA. I have a human DNA sequence consisting of 868 bp, of which 3 specific restriction enzymes made cuts. I was then given a plasmid DNA sequence of 2220 bp and I'm asked to ligate the DNA into a plasmid DNA vector. The plasmid DNA sequence also had one of the same restriction enzymes as the human sequence... ex: the cut is made on the human sequence at bp 101, and...

Restriction enzymes, also known as restriction endonucleases, are enzymes that cut a DNA molecule at a particular place. They are essential tools for recombinant DNA technology. The enzyme "scans" a DNA molecule, looking for a particular sequence, usually of four to six nucleotides. Once it finds this recognition sequence, it stops and cuts the strands. This is known as enzyme digestion. On double stranded DNA the recognition sequence is on both strands, but runs in opposite directions. This allows the...

"The orange locus in cats is located on the X chromosome. In females, XoXo results in orange cats and X+X+ results in black cats When a female is heterozygous XoX+, they express both colors in patches due to a phenomenon called X-inactivation in which one X in every cell is inactivated. These females are called calico or tortoiseshell, depending on the presence of white spots. Male cats are either orange (XoY) or black (X+Y). A cross between a black female...
