Molecular mimicry is a phenomenon wherein the sequences amongst the two organisms or antigens may be similar. This may happen when the epitopes in antigen of pathogen and the host are similar. This would lead to loss of ability of immune cells to distinguish self from non-self leading to autoimmunity.

Example: Staphylococcus mimicks the surface proteins presnt on the sperms.. This results in the formation of antisperm antibodies causing infertility.

Another example is of Streptococcus pyrogens. This gram-positive bacteria is generally found on skin and in the throat. In people with weakened immune system, strep infection may lead to auto-immune disorder Rheumatoid arthritis.
