Describe two ways that antibiotics interfere with bacteria growth and survival.

Describe two ways that antibiotics interfere with bacteria growth and survival.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans. Following are the two ways by which an antibiotic works:

  1. Peptidoglycan is what forms a bacterial cell wall and provide structural strength it requires to survive in the host cell. The synthesis of this peptidoglycan molecules is prevented by the administration of antibiotics, thereby making the cell wall weaker and not strong enough to survive in the body.Example- Penicillin
  2. Some Antibiotics works by inhibiting protein synthesis, thereby preventing bacteria to function properly, especially reproduction. This is done by preventing the necessary molecules for protein synthesis from binding to the ribsomes, the site of protein synthesis. Example- Tetracycline

Livestock farmers frequently give antibiotics to their herds. The antibiotics create drug resistant bacteria, making them less effective. This harms future users of antibiotics who will be using less-effective drugs. What is the nature of the market failure? Explain whether livestock farmers are more likely to overuse or underuse antibiotics

Some bacteria produce multiple toxins that interfere with the host’s immune response. For example, one bacterial toxin is a protease that cleaves the proteins that form tight junctions between skin cells. The result is severe, widespread blistering (patches of skin sort of peel away from the body). The same bacteria also synthesize another protease that cleaves the hinge region of immunoglobulins. Describe, in specific terms, how this activity affects antibody function.
