What are trophic levels? How many trophic levels can a food chain have?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Trophic levels are the hierarchial levels of the ecosystem in which the organisms are placed. It can also be termed as the position of the organism in a ecosystem.

The primary level of the ecosystem would always be producers. Producers are Autotrophs. They produce the own food.

Producers are followed by consumers.

Consumers may be primary consumers ( herbivores) , Secondary consumers ( carnivores) , tertiary consumers and so on.

The number of trophic levels depends on th food chain the formed.

7. Explain what these calculations mean for food webs (consumption, assimilation, production, and trophic level transfer efficiency) . Why does it matter how much a predator eats, excretes, assimilates, etc.? Put this study into a greater context. This will require readings from the textbook and, most likely, the peer-reviewed scientific literature. Make sure to cite the sources of information you use to answer this question.
