Cancer cells,like all cells, need a source of energy (sugar, fat, etc.) and building blocks to make more cells and cell parts.The cancer cells are less efficient in extracting energy than normal cells.In neoplastic tumors, a phenomenon called angiogenesis occurs.

  • Angiogenesis is the formation of new blood.Tumor growth and metastasis depend on angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis triggered by chemical signals from tumor cells in a phase of rapid growth.
  • Angiogenesis is stimulated when tumor tissues require nutrients and oxygen. Angiogenesis is regulated by both activator and inhibitor molecules. However, up-regulation of the activity of angiogenic factors is itself not sufficient for angiogenesis of the neoplasm.
  • Angiogenesis is regulated by both activator and inhibitor molecules.
