What is the MN blood system? What is the pattern of genetic inheritance of the MN blood system?
Three system of blood antigens :
1) ABO
2) Rh
3) MN blood system is a 3rd system of blood antigens. It is also
related to proteins in the red blood cell plasma membrane. This
blood system is due to a glycoprotein which is present on the
surface of red blood cells and behaves as a native antigen.
The pattern of genetic inheritance of the MN blood system is autosomal with codominance. It is a type of lack of dominance in which the heterozygous individual manifests a phenotype that is totally different from that of the homozygous individual.
The possible phenotypes are three blood types:
- type M blood
- type N blood
- type MN blood.
