Phylogenetic trees are hypothesis about evolutionary relationships. Phylogenetic tree make use of characters in different organisms to build an evolutionary relationships between them. Homologous traits are characters in different organisms that are similar because they are inherited from the common ancestor. Analagous traits have different evolutionary origins but superficially will look similar. Therefore, in constructing a phylogenetic tree, homologous traits are more useful than the analagous traits.
