What is the mechanism through which natural selection operates?

What is the mechanism through which natural selection operates?

Answer #1

Natural selection is the mechanism which causes population of living to bring in change over and over time.

In this process populations get adapt and evolve. Those individual organisms who suited best to environment they survive and reproduce at the most successful rate. This helps to produce again more similar well adapted descendants. So after the such successful number of breeding cycles the one which adapted who is better dominate.

So in this way nature filter out to those who can not suit or poorly suit with environment and population has evolved.

Which of the below statements is NOT a legitimate mechanism by which natural selection can maintain genetic variation in a population. Overdominance. When there is heterozygote advantage, as long as a population starts with two alleles (i.e., is not fixed for one or the other allele) both alleles will be maintained at a stable equilibrium. Fluctuating selection. Temporally or spatially varying selective regimes that favor different genotypes can preserve genetic variation. The maintenance of variation by this mechanism requires a...

Which statement below describes one of the reasons scientists were initially slow to accept natural selection as a major mechanism of evolutionary change: a) many scientists assumed inheritance worked through a blending mechanism, so variation required for natural selection would be rapidly lost from populations (b) many scientists assumed inheritance was particulate (as described by Mendel), so variation required for natural selection would be rapidly lost from populations (c) Many scientists assumed differences in fitness among individuals in a population...

All of these but one can be caused by natural selection. Which could NOT be a result of natural selection? New alleles being added to the population as necessary Different phenotypes within a species being favored in different habitats. Decreased allele frequency in a population Higher fitness in best-adapted individuals.
