In the datura plant, purple flower color is controlled by a dominant allele P. White flowers are found in plants homozygous for the recessive allele p. A heterozygous purple-flowered plant is self-fertilized by its own pollen and produces five seeds.

a) Probability than any one seed will grow into a white-flowered plant?

b) Probability that at least two of the five seeds will grow into white-flowered plants?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a. Probability of any one seed to grow into a white-flowered plant is 25%. Fertilization between heterozygous purple flowered plant will produce progeny as below:

Pp X Pp (The gamete produce will be P and p).

Thus, Punnet square will be as follows:

P p
P PP Pp
p Pp pp

Since only homozygous recessive will grow as white flowered plant and here homozygos recessive is only one out of 4 therefore probability is 1/4 = 25%.

b. Since probability of 1 out of 4 = 25%, Therefore probability of 1 out of 5 will be 31.25%. Thus, probability of 2 out of 5 will be 31.25/ 2 = 15.625.

You are studying inheritance of various characters in marigolds including flower color (purple or blue), seed color (white or brown) and seed shape (round or oblong). When you cross a plant that is true breeding for blue flowers, white and oblong seeds with a plant that is true breeding for purple flowers, brown and round seeds you find that all of the offspring have blue flowers, and round, white seeds. You then cross these F1 plants with each other and...

A species of plant is discovered in which individual plants produce either white or purple flowers. True breeding plants that have short stems with white flowers are crossed with true breeding plants that have tall stems and purple flowers. The resulting offspring all have tall stems with purple flowers. When one of these tall, purple-flowered offspring is crossed with a short, white-flowered plant, plants with the following characteristics were obtained in equal proportions. White flowers on tall stems Purple flowers...

In a particular plant, a recessive allele is associated with white flowers (w). The dominant allele (W) results in purple flowers. Two plants are crossed. The offspring are made up of 175 plants with purple flowers and 161 plants with white flowers. Using the allele symbols shown above, the genotypes of the two parents are Ww x ww. Which of the following correctly describes this cross? Choose all that apply. Now determine the genotypes of the possible gametes and set up a Punnett square for the cross between two double heterozygotes, as you did before in a previous question (no need to attach that Punnett square). From your Punnett square, determine how many individual kernels have the genotypes and phenotypes shown in the table below. Enter your answers as a number (e.g. 7) not a word (e.g. seven)...
