Ans. BRCA1 is a human tumour supressor gene which are found in all humans and its protein precurssor is responsible for the repairing of DNA. They play a vital role in the repair of chromosomal damage and error free repair of DNA double strand breaks. It is located on the long (q) arm of chromosome 17 at region 2 band 1.
Mutations in BRCA1 would result in an increase risk of breast cancer. Due to any alteration or mutations the DNA wont be repaired properly resulting in breast cancer. The mutations in BRCA1 account for 20 to 25% of breast cancer.
