Limitations of ecological pyramids:

An ecosystem is defined as a community composed of both living and nonliving entities that altogether live and work together.Ecosystems have no definite sizes as they can be as small as a tree or as large as the whole land mass. Ecosystems are broken into different ranks called trophic levels.

The ecological pyramid has the following limitations like the follows;

  • The ecological pyramid never takes into account the same species belonging to two or more trophic levels.
  • It assumes a simple food chain, something that almost never exists in nature.
  • This ecological pyramid does not accommodate a food web.
  • Saprophytes are not given any place in ecological pyramids even though; they play an important role in ecosystem.
