Here two terms "cocci" and "bacilli" are used to denote the shape of a cell specially in bacteria. Difference between them are given below:-
Cocci:- Cocci is a plural word for "Coccus". The coccus means a cell or bacterium having spherical, ovoid or round shape. The coccus shape is easily seen in the bactera. On the basis of their attached cocci cells, they are named as Diplococci, Streptococci,Tetrads ,Sarcinae, Staphylococci etc. For examples: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenesetc etc.
Bacilli:- Bacilli is a plural word for Bacillus. The Bacillus means a cell or bacterium having rod-shaped. On the basis of their attached bacilli cells, they are named as Diplobacilli, Streptobacilli, Coccobacilli, Palisades etc. For examples: Lactobacillus, Escherichia coli are rod shaped bactera.
