Give examples to prove that microbes release gases during metabolism.
Ans- Microbes produce various types of gaseous end-products during the process of growth and metabolism. The type of gas product produced depends primarily on the type of microbe and the organic material they utilize during the process. The examples that can been seen are-
1) Bacteria and fungi are largely used in the process of fermentation. During this process, they produce Carbon di oxide. The dough used in making of idlis and dose have a puffed up appearance because of action of bacteria that produces CO2.
2) Large holes in "Swiss Cheese" are due to the production of large amount of CO2 which is due to the bacterium Propionibacterium sharmanii.
3) Methane, H2S and CO2 are produced during the microbial digestion of organic compunds during secondary treatment of sewage.
