Despite having a large amount of biodiversity, why is the Amazon Rainforest facing the risk of desertification?
There is no doubt that Amazon rainforest have large amount of biodiversity. In this rainforest maximum number of plant and animal species are present.
But natural soil of the Amazon rainforest is not too fertile. it is enriched by the vegetal covering made of leaves and branches that fall from the trees.deforestation reduce this enrichment. Due to this vegetal covering, sunlight not reaches at the ground. and decomposition process not complete properly.and hence soil reduce fertility. In deforestation zone, the rainfall directly on the ground causing erosion.and contributing to make the soil even less fertile.
Due to less soil fertility and deforestation, Amazon rainforest facing the risk of desertification.
