Define "funny" sodium channel

Define "funny" sodium channel

Homework Answers

Answer #1

"Funny" Sodium channel is the channel which passed the cardiac "pacemaker" I(f) current. The 'funny' (pacemaker, I(f)) current is a mixed sodium/potassium inward current, activated on hyperpolarisation in the diastolic range of voltages. In this diastolic range spontaneous and rhythmic action potentials (AP) is generated.

The function of funny channel in pacemaking makes funny channels an obvious target for drugs aiming at regulation of spontaneous activity and cardiac rate.

I will be glad to see your comment if you have any query and thumbs up if you are satisfied. Thanks....

Phenytoin (sodium channel blocker) and ethosuximide (calcium channel blocker) are anti-seizure drugs that stop seizures from happening. These drugs work by inhibiting electrical impulses (action potentials) from occurring. Explain the importance of sodium and calcium channels on a neuron and the reasons why action potentials do not occur when these channels are inhibited. Be sure to include the phases of an action potential, the channels involved, and the importance of an action potential. APA format please.

An ion channel is a cell membrane channel that is selectively permeable to specific ions, such as calcium, potassium, and sodium. There are different types of ion channels such as a potassium leak channel, which creates a negative charge inside of the cell, but can an ion channel be gated since it selects certain ions? And if yes, then how and what ways can it be gated?
