discuss the difference between dehydration synthesis reactions and hydrolysis reactions

Homework Answers

Answer #1

These two reactions are complete opposite to one another and these differences could be noted as follows:

  • In the dehydration synthesis reaction there are formationof bonds whereas in a hydrolysis reaction, bonds are getting destroyed.
  • In the dehydration synthesis reaction, molecules are joined together by the removal of a water molecule whereas in a hydrolysis reaction, water gets added such that they could dissolve those bonds.
  • Dehydration reaction would link monomers in order to form polymers whereas in hydrolysis reactions polymers are broken down to monomers.

The hydrolysis of pyrophosphate to orthophosphate is important in driving forward biosynthetic reactions such as the synthesis of DNA. This hydrolytic reaction is catalyzed in Escheria coli by a pyrophosphatase that has a mass of 120 kd and consists of six identical subunits. For this enzyme, a unit of activity is defined as the amount of enzyme that hydrolyzes 10micromol of pyrophosphate in 15 minutes at 37 degrees Celsius under standard assay conditions. The purified enzyme has a Vmaxof 2800...
