What it does and how it adds genetic variation to a population of bacteria?

  • Insertion sequences are the simple type of transposons and these transposable elements are capable of transferring copies of themselves to other DNA molecules.
  • For example, composite transposons can transfer antibiotic resistance genes or drug resistance genes between bacterial populations. These mobile genetic elements can be inserted in bacterial chromosome or plasmid cause genetic variability in bacterial populations
