In this symbiotic situation the fungus remains inside the plant root and the association is generally mutualistic. Fungus in mycorrhiza benefited as they are provided with sugars which is produced by the plant by photosynthesis. On the other hand plants are benefitted by the association as they use fungus to absorb water and nutrients from soil . The hyphae of fungus can absorb water and nutrients more efficiently rather than the plant roots.
