Describe the scientific method using Pasteur’s swan-necked flask experiment as an example.

Answer #1

Pasteur recounted his famous swan-neck flask experiment, stating that “life is a germ and a germ is a life. Louis Pasteur used a flask whose neck was shaped like an S or the neck of a swan, hence the name “Swan Neck Flask.” The unique swan-neck feature of the flasks used in Pasteur’s experiment allowed air to enter the flask but prevented the entry of bacterial and fungal spores.Pasteur’s experiment consisted of two parts.

  • In the first part, the broth in the flask was boiled to sterilize it. The curve of flask prevents outside air from entering the flask. When this broth was cooled, it remained free of contamination and no organism growth occurs.
  • In the second part of the experiment, the flask was boiled and when the neck was broken off, bacteria reach the sterile broth and organism growth occurs. The broth in this flask became contaminated.

Suppose Louis Pasteur’s experiment used three open-neck flasks and three swan-neck flasks. At the end of the experiment, what should Pasteur have concluded if all open-neck flasks and one swan-neck flask had growth, but two swan-neck flasks remained free of growth? (a)There must have been a problem with one of the swan-neck flasks, such as a small break in the glass. The entire experiment should be repeated. (b) Spontaneous generation is possible, and the no-growth flasks should be ignored. (c)Spontaneous...

what is the ideal response to this discussion post? The scientific method is a process that allows scientists to explore the observations they make and answer the questions they have (“Scientific Method”, n.d.). The process can be modified when scientists cannot directly test something. The goal of the scientific method is to “discover cause and effect relationships” (“Scientific Method”, n.d.). Scientists can also back up and repeat steps while they are going through the process (“Scientific Method”, n.d.). The steps...
