Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution:-

Methyl Red reagent is yellow weak acid which converts into red neutral molecules when dissociates in water. It is an indicator solution which helps in indicating the pH of broth culture in test. Methyl red have the ability of an organism to produce acid and maintain its end products from fermentation of glucose. Methyl red positive means when culture medium turns red after addition of MR reagent it produces large quantity of acid with pH at or below 4.4 from fermentation of carbohydrate i.e. glucose.

So, the answer are acid and glucose.

if the medium turns red after the addition of methyl red reagent the organism must produce acid during fermentation of glucose.

During a Grignard reagent lab, triphenylmethanol was formed. I did a carbocation test. Instead of turning yellow, the solution turned pink after the addition of the H2SO4. I have tried searching online to find out what that means, but I cannot find it. What does it mean when a carbocation test turns pink?

Synthesis of Triphenylmethanol Why must the reaction be anhydrous?               The water will protonate the Grignard reagent The water will perform an electrophilic addition with the product of the reaction The water will deprotonate the Grignard reagent The water will perform a nucelophilic substitution with the product of the reaction When performing a Grignard reaction it is also very important that the reaction be free from acetone (a chemical we commonly use to clean the glassware). Why must the glassware be...

Acid-Base Behavior In addition to following the general safety rules, chemicals need to be handled properly. In particular, two very important classes of compounds called acids and bases require special attention. These compounds are commonly used reagents in the laboratory; therefore, understanding their proper disposal is beneficial. Physical differences between acids and bases can be detected by the some of the five senses, including taste and touch. Acids have a sour or tart taste and can produce a stinging sensation...
