graft versus host reaction

Answer #1

Graft versus host reaction:

  • This graft versus host reaction is a medical complication following the receipt of transplanted tissue from a genetically different person.
  • This is commonly associated with stem cell transplant (bone marrow transplant), but the term also applies to other forms of tissue graft.
  • GvHD which is the graft versus host disease can also occur after a blood transfusionif the blood products used have not been irradiated or treated with an approved pathogen reduction system.GvHD occurs when the graft rejects the host.
  • The treatment of this GvHD is prescription immuno-suppressants. These drugs reduce the immune response of the donor cells. They are usually prescribed in the form of intravenous or oral steroids.

Researchers at an abdominal transplant clinic are concerned about the rates of kidney graft failure reported by patients based on the gender discordance between host and donor. Gender discordance in transplant is when the host receives a kidney from a donor of the opposite gender. Suppose the following table reports the outcome of a preliminary analysis on the rates of graft failure with either gender discordance or no gender discordance. Graft Failure No Graft Failure Total Gender Discordance 32 35...
