There are three germ layers that are found and they give rise
to various organs and structures. The Ectoderm is
responsible for the formation of the eye lens.
They also give rise to the conjunctiva, cornea, lens of eye,
muscles of iris, vitreous humour, retina, lacrimal gland along with
other parts of the body.
Lens development is closely related to optic vesicle
development. The interaction between the growing vesicle and the
ectoderm causes the ectoderm to thicken at that point.
This thickened portion of the ectoderm is called the lens
placode.
