If you were attempting to guard against GAS and could do only one traditional test (i.e. non-antibody based) on an oropharyngeal sample taken from a patient as he is admitted to the hospital, which test would you choose and why?
GAS is Group A streptococci and they are known for causing throat infections. There are many tests that can be used for testing the presence of GAS but one traditional test is Directigen Group A strep test. The test is a fast method which helps in detection the presence of A beta hemolytic streptococci. The test is easy and is able to easily access presence of absence of GAS. It can be detected when one uses 5% sheep blood agar and this allows growth of the group A hemolytic streptococci species. This test is the best as it helps in quickly detecting the presence or absence of the species.
