Is the replication strategy of Sindbis virus similar/different from poliovirus? Explain!

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Both Sindbis (Togaviridae family) and Polio (Picornaviridae) are RNA viruses but have different mechanism of replication.

In Polio virus Genome is sense strand. It may act as template for negetive strand synthesis. Negetive strand give many positive strand out of which it may translated or may enveloped.

But in Sindbis virus Genome is having 5'Cap and Tail at 3' end. 5' end codes for protein helpful in synthesis of RNA in replication and at 3' end codes for two envelope proteins. RNA is translated partially and protein formed help in synthesis of sub genomic RNA. Sub genomic RNA are either enveloped on host surface or translated.

Why do you suppose an animal virus grown in (and then isolated from) tissue culture might be more susceptible to inactivation by antibody than a similar virus propagated (and then isolated from) in an animal? Assume you do the assay by isolating the viruses grown in these two different environments from antibody and then seek to compare in a controlled environment, which virus particle is inactivated more readily by the presence of appropriate antibody.
