How does (+)RNA viruses replicate their genome via two replicative intermediates? And why is this necessary?
Please elaborate!
The following flowchart shows the replication of (+) RNA viruses.
a)
b) Eg Retroviruses (group 6 of Baltimore classification of viruses)
Beside of using the RNA as templates of proteins, they use DNA to make the templates, which is chopped into the host genome using integrase (enzyme). Replication can then takes place with the help of the host cell's polymerases. This is why replicative intermediates are necessary.
