Penguins exhibit a type of deceptive colouration known as Camouflage.

Camouflage means an animal change its colour inorder to blend into its natural surroundings.  

This helps it protect itself as well as to get food.

Penguins use countershading to help camouflage themselves.

Countershading is the protective coloration in which parts normally in shadow are light and those exposed to the sky are dark.

Penguins spend mostly in water. The dark feathers on their upper part help camouflage them from predators swimming above them in water, whereas the white stomach feathers hide them from predators swimming below them in water.
