unique characteristic of carbon allows it to make 4 bonds with other atom?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The unique characteristic of carbon that allows it to make 4 bonds with other atom:

The Individual carbon atom have an incomplete outermost electron shell. With an atomic number of 6 (six electrons and six protons), the first two electrons fill the inner shell, leaving four in the second shell. To reach electronic stability, carbon atoms must share four electrons from other atoms. (The gaining or losing of four electrons requires too much energy in such a small atom). Therefore, carbon atoms can form four covalent bonds with other atoms to satisfy the octet rule. For example in case of methane molecule, it has the chemical formula CH4. The each of its four hydrogen atoms forms a single covalent bond with the carbon atom by sharing a pair of electrons. This results in a filled outermost shell.

"Understand that the number of covalent bonds an atom can form is directly related to the number of electrons in its own valence shell. Carbon can form 4 bonds is my understanding, so does that mean that the most is 4 and the fewest is 1? or 0?

Here below please describe the atomic structures showing one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms sharing electrons to produce a molecule CH4 (methane). How does the carbon atom share one of its electrons with each hydrogen atom to fill the valences of the hydrogen atoms and how does the carbon atom fill its valence shell (shell #2 for carbon) by sharing 4 electrons with the four hydrogen atoms?

Write and illustrate a storyboard that details the life of a carbon atom that flows through energy creation in animal, bacterial, and plant cells. Please feel free to be creative, but above all: be scientific: annotate your storyboard. You should use pictures/drawings and words. ● Construct and revise an explanation based on evidence for how carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen from sugar molecules may combine with other elements to form amino acids and/or other large carbon-based molecules

Animals can be distinguished from all other living organisms by a suite of characters. During your quarantine you often visited a nearby stream. During one of your adventures you stumbled upon an organism for which you must determine its identity. Your hunch is that this thing is an animal, but you need to make observations to determine this with confidence. Provide the necessary information that allows you to distinguish your organism from each group of living things listed below; you...
