Important steps in sample preservation are:

Drying and frozen: The best way to preserve biological samples (in this case a sample that contains DNA), would be to dry the extracted and if possible purified DNA, as water allows the growth of a lot of microorganisms which would contaminate the sample, and also to freeze the sample, because most microorganisms grow in high and room temperatures. Also, heat can denature the DNA, and UV light cause mutations, so by keeping a sample inside a fridge to be frozen you also avoid UV light.
