how do the observations and figures under microscope compare to those found in biology textbooks?
As for textbook we select the ideal characters of a slide which shown by the all organisms of that species.these character are peculiar for that species. But under microscope that may be little different because of the genetic variation in organisms. So we can identify the things under microscope by comparing the peculiar character . For example in identification of a fungus slide show target shaped spots in textbook we try to find out these spots . If we able to get these type of spots we can say that this is an Alternaria .
