Compare and Contrast the structure and function of AMPA-subtype and NMDA-subtype glutamate receptors. In your answer be sure to discuss similarities and differences in receptor regulation, ion conductance, and influence on neurotransmission
Hi,
The NMDA and AMPA are two of the three subtypes of glutamate
receptors. These are named as per the ligand which activates them.
Both these reeptors are non selective cattion channels which allow
passage of Na+ and K+ ions. Both these receptors produce post
synaptic excitations. One of the unique feature of NMDA receptors
is that they allow movememnt of Ca2+ in addition to Na+ and K+. The
opening of NMDA receptos require the presence of co-agonist ,
glycine and the hyperpolarized channls are bloced by Mg+2. The AMPA
are the first post synaptic recepors to get activated. These two
receptos also differ in their speed. The AMPA recpetor conductance
rise and decrease fast as compared to NMDA.
