Why are pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) necessary for Toll-like receptors (TLRs) to function?
PAMPs is a pathogen associated molecular patterns, which are molecules of foreign pathogen essential for their survival. Eg, bacterial lipopolysachharides, flagella, bacterial cell membrane and viral RNA molecules. These PAMPs are recognized by toll like receptors (TLR) present on cell membrane. TLRs are membrane bounded receptor which are component of innate immune system to recognize foreign pathogens. it is important to have PAMPs present on pathogen because TLRs can only recognise this patterns via PRRs (pattern recognizer receptors). Finally TLRs recognized the PAMPs present on cell and gives singal to innate immune system for destroying antigens.
