Discuss one characteristic of bone marrow and its importance.
Ans. Bone marrow is a semi-solid spongy tissue that is found inside the bones. It contains hematopoietic stem cells which give rise to the three classes of blood cells that are found in circulation - white blood cells (leukocytes), red blood cells (erythrocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes). Red marrow is responsible for producing red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets Yellow marrow consisting mainly of fat cells. Red blood cells (erythrocytes) carry oxygen to the tissues. White blood cells (leukocytes) and platelets (thrombocytes) help in clotting blood and prevent bleeding. Granulocytes (neutrophils, basophils and eosinophils) and macrophages ( myeloid cells) fight infections from bacteria, fungi, and other parasites and also remove dead cells and remodel tissue and bones. B-lymphocytes produce antibodies, while T-lymphocytes can directly kill or isolate the invading cells.
