What are the general possibilities for the chemical types of R groups available for proteins?
There are 20 natural amino acids found in the cells. Each amino acid contains an alpha amino group and an alpha carboxyl group. All amino acids vary in their R-group. R group can be as simple as H as in the case of Glycine or it can be as complex as indole ring as in the case of tryptophan.
Polar amino acids contain a polar R-group: Ex: Ser
Acidic amino acids contain -COOH group. Ex: Asp and Glu
Basic amino acids contain amino group. Ex: Lys
Non-polar amino acids contain a hydrophobic side chain. Ex: Val, Leu and Ile.
