The epithelial layer of your skin does not allow water to enter your body because

A.   the cells have adherans junctions joining them

B.   the cells have gap junctions joining them

C.   the cells have tight junctions joining them

D.   the plasma membrane has a high level of cholesterol

E.   the plasma membrane is coated with a hydrophobic protein

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The outer layer of skin also known as epidermis is made up of stratified squamous epithelial cells consisting mainly of keratinocytes which produces and stores the protein keratin. keratin is an extremely water insoluble protein. This protein makes the keratinocytes very tough scaly and water-proof. This protein is also found in hairs and nails thus making them waterproof. Whereas adherans junction, gap junctions and tight junctions helps in joining of epithelial cells and serves as barrier for entry of pathogens and high levels of cholestrol in plasma membrane alters the fluidity of the membane rather than making it water proof.

Hence option E is correct.
