Homework Answers

Answer #1

Sperm and eggs are haploid cell (n)

Body cells are diploid(2n)

Somatic cell contains 22 pairs of autosomes and 1 pair of sex chromosome

Gametes contain 22 autosome and 1 sex chromosome

Somatic cells are also termed as body cell and gametes are called germ cells.

If chromosomes come in pair(one set of chromosome from mother and another from father) they are called homologous. Gene position, centromere location are same although alleles may differ.

Karyotype is the study of chromosomal characters present in a cell and arrangement of chromosomes evaluating those characters like size , position, centromere location & numbers.

XY denotes male sex chromosome whereas XX denotes female sex chromosome

The scientific name for the common rat is Rattus norvegicus. This animal species is often used for genetic tests and serves as a model for many human diseases including arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. It has a diploid chromosome number in its somatic cells of 2n=42, and its genome, which was sequenced in 2004, is estimated to have a 1C mass of 3.27 picograms (i.e., for the haploid, n=21, genome), which corresponds to about 3.34 million DNA base pairs...

Experiment 3: The Importance of Cell Cycle Control Some environmental factors can cause genetic mutations that result in a lack of proper cell cycle control (mitosis). When this happens, the possibility for uncontrolled cell growth occurs. In some instances, uncontrolled growth can lead to tumors, which are often associated with cancer, or other biological diseases. In this experiment, you will review some of the karyotypic differences that can be observed when comparing normal, controlled cell growth and abnormal, uncontrolled cell...

Probability and Genetics Lab In heredity, we are concerned with the occurrence, every time an egg is fertilized, of the probability that a particular gene or chromosome will be passed on through the egg, or through the sperm, to the offspring. As you know, genes and chromosomes are present in pairs in each individual, and segregate as they go into the gametes (egg and sperm). There are two possible genes (alleles) that the egg or sperm might obtain from each...
