A student wants to do an experiment to test the efficacy of 3 different types of mouthwash. Describe, in as much detail as possible, how the student should proceed with the experiment. Be sure to include the type of media you will use and how you will collect your samples.
Take random individuals/subjects for the study, say 10, but make sure that they belong to the same age group but are have a varied diet.
Post meal, take a cotton swab, roll it on their teeth and streak it on N- agar plates. Keep the plates for incubation overnight at 37 degrees.
Next day count the number of bacteria colonies in each case.
Repeat the above steps after the subjects are asked to clean/gargle their mouth with different mouth Washes post meal.
Calculate the ratio of number of colonies in the case without mouth wash and with mouthwash for each subject and each mouthwash. The one with the least ratio is a more efficient one than others
NOTE: This is a quantitative assay. It could be modified to get qualitative data as well
