Explain the effect of an inactive alleles in the phenotype according to the polygenic model of inheritance ?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In a polygenic inheritance model, a phenotypic trait is controlled by many independently assorting loci. Each gene loci has an active allele or inactive allele. Active alleles are not dominant to the other active alleles in different loci and their contribution to the increment of a phenotype is small and equal to the other active alleles. Inactive alleles of the gene loci do not contribute to the increment of the phenotype and do not produce a functional gene product.

a) Are recessive alleles always more common than dominant alleles? b) Explain why the Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) allele is rare even though the (OI) allele is a dominant trait which means only one copy is necessary to show the disease phenotype?

Total fingerprint ridge count exemplifies a polygenic inheritance pattern. Penrose (1969) and others have suggested that a minimum of seven gene loci contribute to TRC, but a fourlocus model is hypothesized in the problems that follow. Thus, AABBCCDD represents the genotype for maximum ridge count and aabbccdd symbolizes the genotype for the minimum ridge count. Assume that each active (dominant) allele adds 12 ridges to the TRC of the male and 9 to the TRC of the female and that...

A researcher was interested in the effect of gender and viewing a model demonstration on motor performance. Thirty male and 30 female college students served as subjects. Half of the subjects saw a model hit a golf ball that was the same gender as the subject. The other half saw a model who was the opposite gender as the subject. All subjects were tested three times in their ability to drive a golf ball: before they viewed their model, directly...
