Answer #1

The phrase,"Survival of the fittest" has originated from Darwinian theory of evolution to explain the concept of natural selection. The biological concept of fitness is defined as reproductive success. In Darwinian terms the phrase is best understood as "Survival of the form that will leave the most copies of itself in successive generations." The word, "Fittest" according to Darwin meant "better adapted for immediate, local environment". However, in recent times, the phrase has been slightly modified to say "Survival of the fitter" since, Fitness depends on the environment, including predators, so there is no "fittest" for all situations.
