Describe (in at least one sentence each) 3 ways that PCR is similar to DNA replication in cells

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1) DNA replication: Replication of DNA Invivo, PCR is replication of DNA invitro and both require enzymes and primers for the process

2) 1st step involved in both is opening/melting the double strands of DNA Helix, in DNA replication it is done by helicase, in PCR it is by heating to nearly boiling temperatrue.

3) Both DNA Replication in cell nad PCR use DNA polymerase enzyme for the polymerization of individual nucleotide bases, to copy DNA.

4) Both DNA Replication and PCR works on the basis of base pairing rule(A pairs with T by two hydrogen bonds and G pairs with C by three hydrogen bonds).

5) Replication in cells and PCR, proceeds in 5'-3' direction and strand are antiparallel to each other.

As a reminder, PCR is the technique used to replicate DNA in the lab. PCR is based on the way DNA is replicated in cells. During PCR template DNA plus other ingredients are placed in a test tube and the solution goes through repeated cycles of heating and cooling. You can find more information about PCR here. The 'ingredients' of a basic PCR reaction are: DNA template, primer, nucleotides, DNA polymerase, and any salts required for polymerase function (buffer). No...
