Present a reasonable pathway for the full oxidation of propionate(CH3CH2COOH). How many ATP equvialents will be generated per mole of propionate if the cells carry out aerobic respiration?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Propionate ------> Propionyl-COA ------> D-methylmalonyl-Co-A ------> L-methylmalonyl-CoA ------> Succinyl-CoA

Two ATP are required to convert propionate to succinyl-CoA.

One molecule of succinyl-CoA produces 1 GTP, 1 FADH2, and 1 NADH molecules.

So,

Number of ATP equivalents produced = 1 + 1.5 + 2.5 = 5

Net production of ATP equivalents = 5 - 2 = 3

How many grams of ATP are needed to prepare 0.24 L of a 271.0 mM solution? The anhydrous molecular weight of ATP is 478.2 g/mole, the ATP powder being used has 1.0 moles of water and 2.0 moles of Na+ per mole.
