4. Which of the following statements is (are) true concerning the citric acid cycle? a. The citric acid cycle is a strictly aerobic pathway b. In the Citric acid cycle, acetyl Co A is oxidized to CO2 c. The electron carriers NAD+ and FAD are used in the citric acid cycle d. all of the above e. none of the above

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer: D: All the options are correct

Explanation:

  1. While as glycolysis is both aerobic and anaerobic, citric acid cycle is strictly aerobic. If oxygen is not present, ETC will halt resulting in non-production of NAD. This in turn will divert glycolysis to produce lactic acid and no pyruvate, the latter is very essential component of TCA cycle. Thus, TCA cycle is seriously dependent on oxygen. Therefore, strictly aerobic in nature unlike glycolysis.
  2. In the Citric acid cycle, acetyl Co A is oxidized to CO2 and this occurs by the enzyme alpha ketoglutarate dehydrogenase
  3. The electron carriers NAD+ and FAD are used in the citric acid cycle. NAD+ is used at steps 3, 4 and 8 while as FAD is used at 6th step

In step 6 of the citric acid cycle, succinate + FAD → fumarate + FADH2. Which statements concerning this reaction are true? Refer to the figure shown. (Note that in redox reactions, the molecule that “causes” another to gain or lose electrons is referred to as the agent.) Select all that apply. This is not an oxidation/reduction reaction; that is, no electrons have moved. Fumarate is more oxidized than succinate. FAD is more reduced than FADH2. FAD is an oxidizing...

The effect of inorganic phosphate on the activity of the citric acid cycle can be studied in mitochondrial extracts by monitoring the rate of CO2 production. a. Why is the citric acid cycle dependent upon inorganic phosphate? b. Acetyl CoA is added to a rat liver mitochondrial extract containing excess NAD+, FAD, and GDP. The rate of CO2 production increases and then levels off very quickly; the addition of addition acetyl CoA has no effect. Explain why CO2 production begins...

What is a correct statement of beta-oxidation compared to citric acid cycle steps? A. Both pathways include two NAD+   ⟶ NADH steps B. Neither pathway reduces electron carriers. C.   Both pathways demonstrate a pattern of dehydrogenation, hydration, and a second dehydrogenation. D. Fatty acid acyl-CoA correlates with fumarate - both commence a dehydrogenation step. E. The chemical logic of the steps of beta-oxidation mirror the steps of malate⟶ citrate ⟶ pyruvate ⟶ oxaloacetate
