3. A solution of the colored substance, which is known to obey the beer lambert law shows 70% transmittance when measured in a 1 cm cell. Calculate the percent transmittance and absorbance of this solution if measured in (a) a 0.5 cm cell and (b) of a solution of twice the original concentration (in 1cm cell).

Homework Answers

Answer #1

in simple understanding, if all the light passes through the solution without absorption, than transmittion is 100% and vice verse. here transmittance is 70%, so 70% of light is passed through solution and 30%is absorb.

1. now as per the law, if pathlength is zero, the transmittance is 100%. hence if pathlengh is 0.5 cm than transmittance is 50% and absorbance is 50%.

2. if concentration of solution increase, the transmittance is decrease and absorbance is increase. hence here in this case, concentration is twice to original concentration, than transmittance is 35% (half of original transmittance) and absorbance is 65%.

Ali had studied the complexation experiment between Iron (III) (Fe 3+ ) and Potassium thiocyanate (KSCN). He prepared 3.4X10 -5 M of complex solution and the reaction produced orange color of complex Ferrothiocyanate Fe(SCN) 2+ which has a molar absorptivity of 7.00 X 10 3 L cm -1 mol -1 . Then he used Ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis) to analyze the complex. He use a 1.00cm cuvette cell to place the complex samples, sharp and high intensity band was obtained at...

Cholera and other diarrheal diseases cause nearly 2 billion cases of diarrhea annually. Cholera toxin and other bacterial toxins cause the intestine to secrete fluid into the lumen of the gut, depleting the extracellular fluid (ECF) volume. If fluid loss is not matched with fluid intake (law of mass balance), the result is severe dehydration, circulatory collapse, and even death. Drinking a rehydration solution is the most rapid and effective way to replace the large volumes of water lost by...
