Hounsfield scale or CT number is a quantitative scale for describing radiodensity. The ability of matter to attenuate X- ray is measured in hounsfield unit or CT number.

The absorption of X- ray energy is proportional to the atomic number and the density of the material. The contrast may be expressed on a scale norally applied in the field of computed tomography scanning. The cotrast in X- ray is originated from difference in absorption of X- ray by the pure product. Absorption depend upon simple thickness and tissue composition.
