Exposure to some chemicals at subthreshold levels, as defined by standard acute toxicity evaluations, can elicit toxicological as well as pharmacological effects. Explain what this means

Answer #1

This means that a chemical given to a person at sub threshold levels can be beneficial or it may be harmful as well which is determined by hormesis. Hormesis describes the response that is produced in our body when it tries to counterbalance a disruption in homeostasis. If a chemical or medication is given to a person at threshold levels then that person is supposed to response as expected to. However, when a chemical or medication is administered at sub threshold levels then the body will be able to recognize this foreign substance, and it will cause the body to produce an effect opposite to that chemical which may be harmful to the body.
