What is the storage requirement for an open system, leukoreduced packed red blood cell unit? How long will it last and what is the ideal range of temperature?
Open system , leuko-reduced packed red blood cells are separaeds RBCs by blood transfusion and are used widely for treatment of various diseases.
These packed cells are stored in refrigerated conditions, after asking anticoagulamts and necessary nutrient, for not more than 45 days. They are anyway recommended to be used as fresh as possible. Another storage alternative is cryopreservation - freezing post addition of glycerol or other compatible cryoprotectants. This process is cost as well as time intensive.
