Compared to hanging-drop technique, using a motility test medium can eliminate some practical difficulties in detecting the motility of an organism. Such as the results obtained are macroscopic and cumulative.

Motility test agar is a semi solid media into which inoculum is stabbed and incubated for 24 hours. Motile organisms extend from the stab line and produce turbidity throughout the medium. Non-motile organisms grow only along the stab line and leave the surrounding medium clear.
